In every storm, many (brand-new) umbrellas are destroyed, and that is because
the thin metal ribs break. When using 8 ribs, there is not much room to make
the ribs thicker and stronger.
Four plastic ribs can be much stronger than 8 metal ribs, and a square umbrella
of course also is waterproof, and windproof then as well.
With 4 thin sewed-in extra ribs, you still have a round umbrella!
